Description: Many methods are in use for scheduling of irrigation that is, for determining when to irrigate and how much water to apply. One of the most widely used methods is the use of electrical resistance blocks in the soil. In the Okanagan Valley, this method has been found to be especially useful where there is seepage water or a water table present. It has not been found to be as reliable in sandy or gravelly soils as in finer-textured soils. The use of routine meteorological data has not proved as satisfactory in British Columbia as has the use of evaporimeters. No one weather record has given as much accuracy as evaporimeters, and the use of the more complex meteorological formulas has not proved practicable where such rapid changes in climatic conditions occur from place to place as in the Okanagan Valley. It is the purpose of this paper to present some of the problems encountered in British Columbia in the use of evaporimeters.
