Description: In view of an increasing interest in irrigation in South Western Quebec, a study was undertaken to obtain estimates of the magnitude, distribution and frequency of recurrence of soil moisture deficits. Weekly measurements of soil moisture content (gravimetric method) were made at an experimental site near Ormstown, 40 miles South west of Montreal. The moisture regime thus determined was compared with that obtained from a soil moisture budget (described later), in order to verify the budget. The budget was later used in conjunction with 18 years of records from five weather stations to calculate the irrigation water requirements of the respective areas.
