Description: Drainage of organic soils is required for efficient crop production. Not only must water be removed from the soil pro file during the land development stage, but also a continued seasonal drainage program is necessary. The Holland Marsh is the largest commercially developed organic soil area in Ontario, as well as the largest vegetable growing region in the province. Season ally, the marsh can be subject to moisture conditions demanding drainage, and dry periods when irrigation is required. For optimum water management in the area, there is need for an understanding of the duration and volumes involved in such fluctuations. The objective of the present study has been to develop an analytical model to monitor the seasonal moisture variations in a portion of the Holland Marsh. It is the hope that the results from the operation of such a model can be useful as input to an operating water management plan for the area.
