Description: Hydrogenation-derived renewable diesel (HDRD) and biodiesel are the two biomass-based liquid fuels which could be suitable replacement for petro-diesel. HDRD is more promising alternative compared to biodiesel due to the similarities of the elemental composition, cold flow property and heating values with that of petro-diesel. HDRD is produced from upgrading of bio oil via fast pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass. Upgradation is a key step in the removal of oxygen-containing compounds from bio-oil through hydro-processing method. Hydro-treating and hydrocracking are the two unit operations of hydro processing method for upgrading of bio oil to HDRD. Hydro-oxygenation is the major reaction in the hydro treater to remove oxygen from bio oil. Decomposition of high molecular weight molecule to lower one is the important reaction in the hydro cracker. A review on production of HDRD from fast pyrolysis oil is conducted which focus on the effect of catalyst, temperature and catalyst deactivation on the process. This paper also concentrates on the reaction mechanism of model compounds in bio-oil upgrading and the limitations of hydro processing technology.
