Description: Increase in greenhouse gases (GHG) emission due to use of has raised widespread concern for the global climate. The utilization of biomass for energy use could contribute to the reduction of GHG emissions. The overall objective of this research is to assess the availability of biomass in Western Canada including Alberta and Saskatchewan which can be used for providing energy and products for oil sands industry in Alberta. Four key sources of biomass are considered based on their abundance in Alberta. These sources include agricultural biomass, forest biomass, municipal solid waste (MSW) and livestock manure. Key agricultural biomass includes straw from wheat, barley, oats and canola and cereal husk. Key forest biomass includes whole tree, forest residues generated from logging operations and mill residues. The MSW includes the waste disposed in the landfill site. The livestock manure includes the volatile solids produced by different categories of animals. The availability of biomass feedstocks will be assessed through the development of the GIS maps for Alberta and Saskatchewan. These maps show the intensity of biomass availability and the location where biomass is available. The information developed in this study would be helpful in making investment decisions regarding the development of biomass-based facilities.
