Description: Food processors in the Province of Alberta generate a significant amount of waste. Currently most of these waste materials are land filled. Trucking food waste to distant landfills is costly and also decomposing these in landfills could have environmental issues. There is a potential of utilizing these food wastes (e.g., grocery waste, food processing waste, livestock operation waste, yard waste) to produce bio-fuel such as methane, hydrogen, ethanol, and biodiesel. With appropriate processing, various technologies could be used for converting food waste into bio-fuels such as single stage anaerobic digestion, multistage anaerobic digestion, hydrothermal gasification, solid state fermentation, bacterial fermentation etc. The appropriate conversion technology depends on the type and characteristics of food wastes (e.g., moisture content, amount of solid, amount of sugar, starch, cellulose, lipid, protein). The present study is focussed on the assessment of quantity and location of food waste available in the Province of Alberta through development of the data-intensive geographical information system (GIS) maps. These maps have been developed on the data from the current food industry. The overall outcome of the study would help in making appropriate policies and investment decisions in utilization of these waste.
