Description: Water security is the capability of a community to have adequate access to sufficient quantity and good quality water and safeguard resources for the future generations. Due to weather variability, climate change, increasing water demand and human development, the stress over freshwater resources has increased, making it necessary to quantify the available water resources. Thus, understanding the spatial and temporal variability of water security can play a pivotal role to sustain the available fresh water resources. In this study, SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) was used to simulate the Grand River Watershed (GRW), which is one of the largest watersheds in south-western Ontario. The model was calibrated and validated at multiple sites using SUFI-2 algorithm within SWAT-CUP. The calibrated model was utilized to analyse blue and green water availability, based on drainage areas. Factors like human water demand (anthropological) and Environmental flow requirement (environmental) were used to determine water security in terms of water scarcity. In the poster, various results such as calibration and validation statistics and temporal time series graphs at various sites, spatial-temporal patterns of total blue water, green water and water scarcity will be presented. In addition, impacts of climate factors such as precipitation and temperature on blue, green water and water scarcity will be assessed. This study will address water security issues in GRW by quantifying the available water resources and identifying hot spot regions which need targeted action.
