Description: Accurately measuring agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is critical for the development of appropriate agricultural management strategies to mitigate climate impacts. GHG fluxes from soils are commonly measured using either manual or automated static closed chambers. Measurement with manual chambers is labour intensive and limited in frequency of measurement – often measurements are taken only at weekly or fortnightly intervals. With such a low temporal resolution, short term fluxes due to weather changes or soil changes might not be captured, nor are diurnal variations. To address this issue, automated chamber systems equipped with on-line gas analyzers can continually measure GHG fluxes from soils, but they are costlier to procure and operate. Such an automated system was implemented, together with manual chambers, in a randomized complete block design experiment with 15 treatments replicated four times. Manual chamber measurements are taken from all 60 plots, and supplemental data will be continually collected using custom-built automated chambers deployed on one replicate of each treatment. Temporal changes in GHG emissions, including short-term fluctuations, will be analyzed to improve emission estimates. Estimates from the combined method will be compared to estimates generated by manual or automated chambers alone. This improved system could provide higher quality and more cost-effective data for improving agricultural management practices.
