Description: This study evaluates 3 popular BMPs that could be adopted in southwestern Ontario (SWO) to improve water quality in the headwaters of rural watersheds contributing to the western basin of the Lake Erie. The study site was located northeast of Elginfield, Ontario, Canada in the headwaters of the Thames River. A vegetated buffer strip (VFS) to treat shallow surface runoff prior to entering the municipal drain (MD), an Ephemeral Gully Erosion Control (EGEC) structure to stabilize and protect a large gully erosion site, and a series of low-grade weirs were installed within the MD as speed bumps to slow down and settle out suspended sediment load in runoff. Monitored events, between June 2015 and Sept 2016, show that both a riparian VFS and an EGEC structure were effective with near 50% reduction in the total phosphorus loads in surface runoff, during a snowmelt event in January 2016. Periodic surveys of the associated municipal drain channel showed that low-grade weirs were effective in trapping sediments with a mean deposition depth of roughly 10 cm during the monitoring period, with the bulk of the deposition as the result of a January 2016 snowmelt event. Maintenance of these BMPs could be accomplished through incorporation as part of the MD, administered through the local municipality and paid for by the contributing watershed. Within the SWO snow belt, BMPs that function through the winter, such as EGEC structures and low-grade weirs, are required as the critical periods for phosphorus loading occur in the winter and spring months.
