Description: Non-Point Source (NPS) pollution is a major source of water pollution that leads to impairment of waterbodies’. Management authorities have been implementing strategies to protect waterbodies. However, NPS pollution is difficult to characterize as it’s diffuse in nature, therefore necessitating the implementation of Best Management Practices (BMPs) to reduce NPS pollution. Implementation of BMPs should be performed on the major contributing areas to maximize effectiveness. Approaches such as the Critical Source Areas (CSA) has been used for the implementation of BMPS. CSAs are hot spots areas in the watershed that produce most of the NPS pollution. Most studies simulated CSAs at the sub-basin level, however, resources for implementing BMPs are limited. Therefore, a targeted approach identifying smaller contributing areas within the sub-basin level is warranted. Therefore, a modeling system that integrates GIS with watershed models can be developed to locate the CSAs in the targeted watershed. By identifying these areas, decision makers can effectively allocate the limited resources to mitigate NPS pollution. In the proposed research, AGNPS and SWAT models will be evaluated to identify the CSAs at the sub-basin and field scales. CSA’s will be identified at a watershed in Ontario, that contributes to the Great Lakes. Geospatial data with monitoring data for water quality and quantity will be analyzed at the sub-basin and the field scales. Results from this study will help in identifying CSA’s to implement BMPs. Additionally, the developed modelling system can be used as decision tool to evaluate different scenarios before the implementation of BMPs.
