Description: Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have attracted increasingly more scientific and public attention due to their persistence and toxic nature. This study aims to determine the present residue distribution levels of Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) in soil samples collected from southwestern Ontario. Five sites were selected. Soil samples were collected and detected by the technique of sonication extraction followed by rotary concentration and the analysis of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The concentration of DDT in the five sites were in the range of 95-341 ug/kg based on the dry weight. Grid soil sampling was performed to verify the accuracy and reliability of the test results. Historical values of DDT in the region were as high as 59,000 ?g/kg in 1974. An average of 151 ?g/kg DDT from five sites was detected in this research, indicating a significant and promising reduction of historical levels of DDT during the past years.
