Description: This research investigates temperature distribution in a packed-bed of canola seeds as knowledge of temperature distribution is critically important according to various heating conditions. The samples are contained in RF-transparent bags (7 bags, 10cm diameter and 70cm). The initial conditions for the canola sample is 9% moisture contents (wet weight basis) and average weight of 25±1 kg (distributed in 7 RF-transparent bags, average weight, 3.6±0.2 kg/bag). The samples are heated in 50 ohm RF heating system (developed in Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at U of S and Coaxial Power Inc.) at different power levels (3 kW, 5kW, 7kW) at a constant frequency of 27.12MHz. Temperature history at various points in the system is recorded. The hottest spot (80°C) is detected at the outlet corner of the applicator adjacent to the hot electrode in all the power levels, whereas the cold spot is detected at the feed end of the applicator adjacent to the cold electrode. There is significant difference between hottest spot and coldest spot. The temperature history indicates that there is significant non-uniformity in the system, where, the highest temperature occurs adjacent to the hot electrode and the lowest temperature occurs adjacent to the cold electrode. The time to reach the hottest spot decreases with increase in power.
