Description: Alberta, recognition of a risk management approach to the province recurrent drought lead to the development and operation of 174 of standard Ag-Meteorological station network across the province. Most of the stations in the network monitor air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, all season precipitation and solar radiation. Moreover, soil profile moisture and temperature are monitored at 38 of the network stations. The weather data is near real time (NRT) and quality controlled and made available to public via Alberta Climatic Information Service (ACIS) web site. ACIS also makes available NRT weather data collected by different agencies in the province. AF’s weather data have markedly enhanced the province agricultural risk management capacity by timely and reliably monitoring and reporting drought and excessive moisture conditions, grass fire and weather based pest-insect and disease risks. Moreover, the network weather data is the basis for the province crop insurance, water management, flood risk, hydrological modeling and environmental protection programs.
