Description: Air quality within swine facilities is important due to its effect on the health of animals and workers. Improvement of air quality within swine facilities can be accomplished via the removal of bioaerosols, which consists of various components, including airborne dust and microorganisms. Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) is an example of a disease-causing microorganism that can be transmitted by aerosols. PRRSV causes high financial losses to the swine industry due to disease manifestation in swine, and removal of PRRSV in the air of swine facilities could potentially prevent airborne transmission of the virus to susceptible animals within the swine facility itself as well as to other facilities located some distance away. The Electrostatic Particle Ionization (EPI) is a device that emits negative ions that collide with airborne particles, subsequently polarizing them and causing these particles to attach to surfaces. The ability of the EPI to reduce airborne PRRSV has not been tested. Laboratory experiments will be conducted to evaluate the performance of the EPI in reducing the presence of dust and PRRSV aerosols in a (source) chamber where PRRSV is artificially introduced, and in reducing movement of the dust and PRRSV aerosols to an adjoining (recipient) chamber. The airflow from the source chamber to the recipient chamber will be controlled to simulate aerosol transmission of PRRSV between barns under various atmospheric conditions. Aerosol concentration and particle size distribution, as well as PRRSV loads, will be measured in both chambers to quantify the effectiveness of EPI.
