Description: Lignocellulosic biomass straw is an abundant agricultural residue considered recently to be a good source of bioethanol. The energy from lignocellusic biomass is environmental friendly and renewable, however, the complex lignocellulosic nature makes the process uneconomically feasible. This drawback necessitates the breakdown and disruption of the lignified matrix to enhance easy and economical access to the energy potentials (cellulose and hemicellulose). Barley straw was subjected to radio frequency (RF) alkaline pretreatment to increase the degradability, accessibility, and digestibility of the energy potentials. The effect of the pretreatment was accessed through chemical composition analysis using the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Standard method. The RF alkaline treatment combinations that results to the optimum accessibility were selected and then enzymatically digested with a combined mixtures of cellulase and ?-glucosidase enzymes at 50oC for 96 h on a shaking incubator at 250 rev/min. The glucose in the hydrolyzed samples was subsequently analyzed using the YSI biochemistry analyzer. The obtained results confirm the effectiveness of the RF alkaline pretreatment. The glucose yield shows the amount of readily available glucose in the RF alkaline pretreated and non-treated biomass that can be released during the enzymatic hydrolysis, which will be available for bioethanol production.
