Description: This paper reviews the techno-economic analysis (TEA) of torrefaction and densification of wood and agricultural crop residue pellets production. Biomass, a potential energy alternative and can reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels. Torrefaction of biomass is a thermochemical process based on decomposition of hemicellulose via improving the physical and chemical properties of the biomass. Densification is achieved by pelletizing which increases specific biomass particle density to over 1000 kg/m3, and its advantage is to achieve consistent physical properties. Working backwards from the research developments of biomass torrefaction and pelletization, this paper attempts to answer the following questions: based on the state-of -the-art torrefied pellets, what would be the maximum capital investment for a plant that torrefies and pelletize biomass, and the possible bottlenecks to be avoided so that production is economically viable. Finally, how TEA of torrefied wood and agricultural crop residue pellets results could help potential bioenergy industry in identifying economically sustainable plant, in long-term contribute to energy security, and a cleaner environment in the future.
