Description: The Colorado potato beetle (CPB), Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), is the major insect pest of potato plants. Currently, the most effective method of controlling the CPB is to apply chemical insecticides throughout its life cycle. However, the CPB has the ability to resist to most chemical insecticides. The control of this insect pest has therefore become extremely difficult, prompting researchers to explore effective control alternatives. The use of pneumatic methods to control the CPB is an interesting alternative to chemical means. The main objective of this research study was to develop an effective pneumatic control method of the CPB in order to reduce the reliance on chemical insecticides in potato fields. In this context, a pneumatic prototype machine was designed and built. This prototype machine consists of using positive air pressure to dislodge CPBs from potato foliage, deposit them on the ground between the rows, and destroy them. In this study, the impact of three airflow velocities (45, 50, and 55 m/s) and two travel speeds of the tractor (5 and 6 km/h) on the control of CPBs has been investigated in potato plots. Overall, obtained results showed that potato yields are better in the plots controlled by the pneumatic prototype than in the control plots using an organic insecticide. This suggests that the pneumatic prototype machine is efficient in controlling the CPB. The success of this innovative control method could highly contribute in reducing the use of chemical insecticides to control the CPB.
