Description: The Grand River Watershed (GRW) is one of the largest river basins in South-western Ontario, Canada. Due to weather variability, increasing water demand and human development, the stress over freshwater resources has increased. Climate change has further added a new level of uncertainty with respect to freshwater availability, thus understanding its effect on various components of the hydrological cycle can play a pivotal role in efficient management of the available freshwater resources. The GRW was previously simulated with a hydrological model (Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT)) to study the spatial-temporal dynamics and assess water security situation of the watershed. The model was calibrated and validated at multiple sites using SUFI-2 algorithm within SWAT-CUP. In this study, future predictions from six GCMs (Global Climate Models) under two different RCP scenarios will be input to the already developed model to analyze the impact of climate change on available freshwater resources under two future periods, 2035-64 and 2070-99. Water demand and other factors like Environmental flow requirement will be used to determine water security in terms of water scarcity. In the presentation, various results such as spatial-temporal patterns of total blue water, green water and water scarcity will be presented. The water scarcity predictions from all the GCMs will be compared amongst themselves and to the base-period. Overall, this study will investigate the impact of climate change on water security framework in the GRW by quantifying the available water resources and identifying future hot spot regions which need targeted action.
