Description: Owing to the biodegradability, renewable nature of oils extracted from oil seeds and plant materials gained huge attention as a complementary to conventional feedstocks originated from fossils. Extracted oils from oil seeds and plant materials were found to be favorable as edible oils and also as a potential raw materials for value-added products, such as bio-based fuels, lubricants, polymers, resins, soaps, detergents, cosmetics, candles, personal/welness care products, paint making, wood treatments, insulators and other products for chemical industry. Oil seeds and plant materials can act as a natural reservoir to produce value-added chemicals at industrial and laboratory scale on a sustainable ground. This presentation elaborates various pretreatment and oil extraction techniques such as; traditional methods (hot water, steam extraction), conventional methods (solvent extraction, mechanical extraction), and advanced techniques (microwave assisted extraction - MAE, ultrasonic assisted extraction - UAE, supercritical fluid extraction - SFE, microwave-assisted hydrodistillation - MAHD, pressured liquid extraction - PLE, and Soxtec extraction) along with the merits and demerits of each extraction technique and its development. Further, oil yield, purity and quality will be compared based on aforementioned extraction techniques. This presentation concludes with suggesting appropriate oil extraction technique(s) based on the feedstocks and intended area of application.
