As part of the efforts to reduce the environmental impacts caused by the aviation sector, the use of biobased instead of fossil-based materials has been assessed as a possible option. Through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), the environmental performance of Natural Fiber Polymer Composites has been proved to have a higher environmental performance in the automotive sector and are emerging as an option for weight reduction in aircraft. However, said analysis handle co-products by applying allocation techniques. ISO standards recommend the quantification of the use and fate of co-products and wastes through ?system expansion?. The objective of this study thus was to include the fate of co-products as well as the full consequences induced by the use of flax fibers as reinforcement in composite materials by carrying out an LCA of a novel biocomposite panel with an application in the aviation sector. The analysis was conducted using SimaPro software using the ILCD 2001 Midpoint+ impact assessment method. Overall, results showed the importance of taking into consideration the actual fate of co-products into the environmental assessment for ensuring informed policy-making and strategy development. Moreover, it was shown that for an application in the aviation sector, the mass of the panel is the critical element; regardless of their nature, lighter materials will have a higher environmental performance. Nonetheless, results bring forward the climate change mitigation potential of biobased materials as a result of carbon sequestration and storage, specifically for an application in sectors where products have a lifespan of 20 years and over.
