Description: Agricultural organic wastes in Kenya accounts for 60 to 70% of the 22,000 tons generated per day. This are mainly disposed off using the landfill or burning, hence contributing to the GhG emission. A solar and Compost hybrid heat collector has been developed in Kitale, Trans-Nzoia country in Kenya to utilize the identified farm wastes to generate energy for water heating and compost for soil amendment on small farms. Specifically, it was sought firstly to characterize the suitability of locally available farm wastes for hot composting and secondly to quantify the energy. Green grass clippings and weeds, cow and chicken manure, shredded maize stover and sawdust were sampled locally and sent for analysis for total Carbon, Nitrogen, moisture content pH and micronutrients were analyzed using the TMECC methods. The C/N ratio was then calculated. To profile energy and temperature, data loggers were mounted at different locations within the compost reactor and a water tank. Data analysis was done using the Origin Pro 2018 graphing software. Feedstock characterization established a pH of 5.9-8.0, C/N range of 22:1 to 26:1, moisture content 74 - 92%wb and availability of key soil nutrients in the wastes (compost). Temperatures of 65 oC within the first 48 hours of composting where achieved. The compost heat extractor (COHE), yielded 174 kWh in 205 hours from 1350kg of blended biomass (C/N 26:1) with coefficient of Performance (COP) of of 74.22 and maximum of 489.9, promising to be a sustainable renewable energy and waste management system.
