Description: The new regulations restricting the use of antibiotics in livestock production have led to urgent need by pig producers to improve their sanitization and disinfection procedures to ensure that exposure of their herd to disease-causing pathogens is eliminated or reduced significantly. Hence, the goal of this study is to investigate new and alternative sanitization and disinfection procedures, particularly for pig barns that adapted antibiotic-free production. The overall approach is to identify existing and potential biosecurity measures from other industries requiring strict control of pathogens such as the food industry and health institutions, and then evaluate their feasibility and efficacy in swine barns. Initial results from on-going literature search showed that currently the most commonly employed method for controlling pathogens in livestock facilities is the use of chemical disinfectants. Alternative and experimental measures were also identified from literature search, including ultraviolet (UV) germicidal irradiation, ozonation, thermo-assisted drying, non-thermal plasma, the use of slightly acidified water spray, among others, with varying degrees of efficacy in inactivating pathogens. An assessment criteria is currently being developed which will be applied to rank the various potential measures, and to select the most promising ones for the next phase of the study (testing under pig barn conditions). The in-barn tests will compare the efficacy of selected treatment measures for controlling microbial growth on three types of pig pen surfaces, namely metal, plastic, and concrete. The experiment will be repeated over 4 room cycles, and the results will be presented at the conference.
