Description: Big data analysis in Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) is considered nowadays an extremely promising approach in research. PLF devices are increasingly adopted in animal husbandry, so that amounts of data are available concerning individual animals. In dairy cattle farming, health conditions and parameters connected to milk produced are of great interest to ensure animal welfare and to optimize production. In particular, the ever more widespread Automatic Milking Systems (AMS) provide farmers with detailed data, but the resulting databases are usually considered separately from other ones available, and only partly exploited in terms of data analysis. Moreover, important environmental data such as indoor THI are often measured in dairy barns, but seldom recorded and integrated in overall databases.
This study aims to develop a procedure to create a database of parameters collected in dairy cattle farms though several different devices and to formulate a numerical model suitable to quantify the influence of the thermo-hygrometric index (THI) on milk production. The study has been developed with reference to a dairy farm with about 65 lactating cows in Emilia-Romagna (Italy), equipped with AMS, activity collars and thermo-hygrometric sensors.
Based on the numerical model formulated, each cow was characterized in terms of her response to heat stress conditions and thus classified in terms of susceptibility to heat stress. The study provided a model capable to characterize the effects of heat stress conditions on individual animals, thus contributing to lend indications about targeted treatments to mitigate heat stress.
