Description: Understanding the spatiotemporal variability of soil water saturation in agricultural fields is essential for devising efficient water management practices to support precision agriculture (PA). In hydrogeophysics, near-surface geophysical methods such as Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Electromagnetic Induction (EMI) are used to determine the spatiotemporal variability of hydrological, physical, and chemical soil properties. The relationship between the apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) and water saturation is one component of the Archie?s equation and determination of this correlation with integrated EMI-GPR is a novel approach. Objectives of this study were to estimate the spatiotemporal variability of soil water saturation with GPR?s ground wave velocity (GWv) and to correlate the GPR estimated water saturation with EMI?s ECa. Field data were collected during irrigation and drainage under naturally varying compactions at the Pynn?s Brook Research Station, Pasadena, Newfoundland, Canada. Irrigation was applied at a rate of 0.13 cm/min for 15 min by considering the root depth as 20 cm. ECa and GWv data were collected using a multi-coil EMI sensor and a 500 MHz centre frequency GPR system, respectively. Spatiotemporal variability of saturation and ECa were mapped and their correlation assessed. Preliminary analyses suggest that ECa and GWv may serve as reliable proxies for soil water saturation under the tested wetting and drying conditions. The results of our feasibility study will advance the integration of the GPR and EMI methods (based on the Archie?s equation) in support of large-scale PA.
