Description: A selective condensation system will be presented as a technique for the improvement of bio-oil obtained by fast pyrolysis. The design of the condensation system will use the fractional technique to improve the separation between the aqueous phase and the oily phase, increasing the quality and yield of the bio-oil. During fractional condensation, the most influencing parameter is the condensing temperature, which significantly affects compound enrichment and composition of bio-oil. A combination of 2-4 condensers over a wide temperature range has been studied, where the first condenser is usually high temperature controlled and the second or third condenser has a low temperature profile. It has been observed that using the high temperature-controlled condensers, a fraction of bio-oil with lower water content and higher quantity of organic compounds can be recovered. And, the remaining fraction contains high water content and light-oxygenated compounds, using low temperature-controlled condensers. Fractional condensation of pyrolysis vapours depends on the dew points of the bio-oil components. Therefore, the chemical compounds of the bio-oil must be considered for the design and selection of the conditions for operating the fractionated condensation system. The design of a three-stage condensation system to be used in conjunction with the pyrolytic auger reactor to obtain different liquid products by fast pyrolysis will be presented, considering a balance between cost and efficiency in product recovery. In addition, the optimization process of the temperature profile of each stage of the fractionated condensation system will be presented.
