Description: The circular economy is increasingly popular, particularly in agriculture, which is a major source of waste. A great deal of research is being carried out to transform this lignocellulosic waste through desired sustainable processes. The objective of our approach, based on big data techniques, is to help in the choice between different pre-treatment processes and different biomasses. Through "life cycle thinking", it is possible to assess the potential environmental impacts. However, these environmental analyses require a great quantity of data: foreground data and background data. Background data are generally accessible in specialized databases, while foreground data need to be modeled or measured. The collection of these data can be long and tedious. Nevertheless, an increasing number of scientific articles describe the processes for the valorisation of agricultural by-products, which is a great source of data. This source of information is heterogeneous but big data tools can be used to compile, process and analyse them. The main goal of our approach is therefore to develop an intensive data collection approach and an associated tool to assist in making choices in the context of a circular economy.
Five steps define our approach: (1) definition and purpose of the study, (2) collection, selection and processing of relevant data from big data, (3) calculation of economic and environmental impacts, (4) analysis and visualization of results using data sciences and (5) decision-making. An Excel-VBA tool was created to initially study the environmental impacts of seven types of batch processes for two biomasses: rice straw and corn stalks.
