Description: Soil compaction in farmland has affected on the efficiency of agricultural production. Traffic in agricultural vehicles inevitably causes soil compaction, resulting in plant growth inhibition by reducing pore space in the soil. Tire ruts characteristic due to tractor driving depends on not only mechanical factors including the tractor weight, driving speed and tire shape, but also soil properties such as stiffness, texture and water content. In this study, 3D models of tire ruts generated by tractor traffic on two different farms were built. After acquiring images and video from an RGB camera, Structure from Motion (SfM) technique was applied to construct the tire ruts 3D models, which were used for the analysis of its depth and shape. As a result, it was confirmed that high-resolution data of depth, area, and volume of tire ruts were seamlessly obtained from a 3D model. Even under the same conditions of tractor operation, differences in tire ruts depth and shape on farmland are associated with soil characteristics, which suggests that the soil physical properties such as stiffness, compaction and wetness can be assessed indirectly.
