Description: Pork accounts for more than one-quarter of the total amount of proteins consumed worldwide and for 35% of all meat production. However, nowadays pig production systems are facing unprecedented challenges related to environmental footprint and animal welfare. Moreover, increasing world population means increasing demand for food. One way to meet these challenges is to implement precise health monitoring systems and develop animal comfort indices and production indicators. This information can then be used to improve environment control strategies and, thus, the performance of production facilities. The objective of this review was to identify the governing components of environment control systems, namely the ventilation systems. It also provides information on how to anticipate the performance of different control strategies using CFD technology which offers multiple advantages, including saving resources and obtaining high quality data in situations with limited access to experimental facilities. Recent developments in how to analyze indoor environmental conditions will also be discussed including empirical, bioenergetic, machine learning, and artificial intelligence models. Finally, the study will report on new trends in environment control strategies in pig production systems focusing on animal welfare and optimization of resources given changing climate conditions.
