Description: Urea is one of the essential fertilizer components for crop production. It can support the growth of non-leguminous plants that do not produce root nodules. The application of urea shows dissolution effect when it gets in contact with the moisture in the soil, and converts into the different forms of nitrogen species (NH4+, NH3, NO2-, NO3-), this is due to biochemical degradation done by soil microorganisms and the photosynthesis activity in plants. These activities also contribute to urea volatilization and loss, alongside soil moisture, temperature, type of soils and aeration.
Wollastonite (calcium silicate) mineral is known to raise the pH of the soil, improve soil quality and provides resistance against pests. Wollastonite has shown carbon sequestrating potential as calcium carbonate by increasing soil inorganic carbon content when applied as a mineral soil amendment in agricultural soil. Therefore, it is of interest to have a better understanding of the interaction between wollastonite and urea in soil.
In this study, geochemical modelling is used to identify the reactions between calcium silicate present in wollastonite, and nitrogen transformation species generated from the dissolution of urea in soil. Geochemical modelling software, Visual MINTEQ and the Geochemist Workbench? are used and, modelling carried out in four stages to investigate the interactions among different media: 1) soil and water 2) soil, urea and water 3) soil, wollastonite and water 4) soil, urea, wollastonite and water. Factors to be considered in each stage are: dissolution, speciation of ions, relative pH and temperature.
