Description: The refuge-seeking behavior of insects is one of the significant parameters that need to be considered while developing a protocol for managing insects in stored grains. A laboratory study was conducted to characterise the refuge-seeking behavior of individual adults of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst). The experiment was performed using male and female adults in the presence as well as the absence of wheat, in the dark, and each condition was replicated 20 times. The apparatus consisted of a glass tube with an inner diameter and length of 2.5 cm and 10 cm, respectively, connected to acrylic cages, with an inner diameter of 2.5 cm and length of 1 cm, on both sides of the glass tube. The acrylic cages and the glass tube were separated by a layer of mesh screen with a 0.16 mm opening. A single male or female adult was introduced at the center of the glass tube and the acrylic cages were kept empty for all the experiments. An infrared camera and a VHS tape recorder were used to monitor the movement of the insect inside the glass tube. The results of the study revealed that the adults evenly distributed inside the tube 1 min after introduction, and this distribution was not influenced by the presence/ absence of the wheat.
