Description: The objective in this research work is to enable variable rate application on commercial sprayers for real time application of plant protection products. The requirements to enable variable rate application on sprayers include machine vision system, standardized communication system via ISO-bus protocol, modified booms, and specific nozzles.
At the first stage of this research work, an ISO-bus node to integrate the machine vision system with the sprayer will be developed. This is performed indoors where an apparatus that consists of a static sprayer of 6 nozzles and virtual terminal is being modified. The static sprayer represents one section of Sprayer Case IH 3340, while the virtual terminal used is Raven (Pro 700). The methodology includes analyzing the ISO-bus data required to open and close the nozzles by collecting data on laptop. An ISO-bus extension was made using CANUSB dongle to connect the laptop to the static sprayer and log raw ISO-bus data. The communication messages required to open and close nozzles is figured out by controlling the logging rate with manipulating the virtual terminal and its knobs.
Next, a suitable laptop software that resemble the machine vision system will be written to control the solenoids of the nozzles from the laptop. At the following stages, an ECU will be developed, based on the software, to integrate the machine vision system. Mechanical modifications on the booms and nozzles will be made before starting tests outdoors.
