Description: Electrospray is a liquid atomization process that breaks a liquid stream into a plume of highly-charged fine particles through electrostatic forces. The technique has been successfully employed in mass spectrometry for various applications in the pharmaceutical and medical fields. In this study, a laboratory-scale electrospray system using deionized water was developed for inactivating bacteria that adhere to surfaces in livestock facilities. The electric field created between a needle injector (connected to a high voltage power supply) and a counter electrode (grounded) caused water droplets coming out from the needle to break into fine nano-sized droplets. The efficiency of the nanospray in inactivating microbes was evaluated while considering various parameters, i.e., distance between needle and grounded electrode, treatment time, needle size, applied voltage, pH level, salinity, and liquid flow rate. In these various trials, the target bacteria was collected (passive) from airspace in poultry barn on trypticase soy agar plates for 5 min. After exposing the plates to the nano droplets, the plates were incubated at 37oC for about 7 h prior to bacterial (CFU) counting. Inactivation efficiencies up to 95% were obtained from the various experiments. Results indicate that the nanospray technology is a potential chemical-free alternative to conventional methods (e.g., chlorine spraying) in decontaminating surfaces of livestock buildings. Future tests will be focused on upscaling the technology for larger scale applications as one needle spray can only cover approximately 25 mm2 area.
