Description: The pulp and paper industry is the principal wood based paper manufacturing industry in the world. High amount of wastewater production and energy consumption are the main problems in this industry. The wastewater of the pulp and paper industry is rich in contaminants like dissolved solids, sediments, adsorbable organic halides (AOX), and chlorinated organic compounds, resulting very high values of chemical oxygen demand (COD), and biological oxygen demand (BOD). Therefore, wastewater produced in the pulp and paper making process requires treatment prior to discharge into any receiving water. This study reviews and discusses the current status of the pulp and paper industry, manufacturing techniques, key pollutants released during the production process, as well as recent and advanced wastewater treatment technologies used in the industrial sector. The review revealed that the integrated system is the most stable and appropriate system for wastewater treatment in the pulp and paper industry that can help in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and energy costs, and in achieving environmental regulations.
