Description: Sustainable management of agriculture-intensive watersheds is a challenging problem that has short-term and long-term trade-offs between economic costs (e.g., costs associated with nutrient management, Best Management Practices (BMPs) etc.) and environmental benefits (e.g. phosphorus load reduction). These trade-offs can be visualized and analyzed by combining multi-criteria optimization algorithms and watershed simulation models into integrated decision support tools. This study couples the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) watershed model with a novel Multi-Criteria Optimization framework, to assist decision makers in identifying cost-effective BMP application locations within a watershed. The coupled decision support tool is applied to watersheds in Ontario. Results show that our decision support tool can assist decision makers in identifying cost-optimal BMP application locations, to achieve pre-defined phosphorus load reduction targets.
