Description: Recently membrane bioreactor (MBR) has gained massive attention due to improving wastewater quality and reusing this wastewater for production processes. A case study was conducted on a biological followed by an MBR effluent treatment plant in Bangladesh. ?The wastewater quality parameters such as BOD, COD, TDS, and TSS have been monitored after the biological process/before MBR and after MBR treatment/discharge point over four weeks. Nearly 99 % of TSS was found removed after MBR treatment while BOD and COD removal percentage was almost 90 %. Around 60 % of the TDS of the wastewater was removed after MBR treatment. The TDS removal is less compared to BOD, COD, and TSS as in this experiment ETP did not have noon-filtration or reverse osmosis after membrane treatment.?MBR treated wastewater quality was compared with Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) (ZDHC-foundational, progressive, and aspirational limit) and Department of Environment (DoE) requirements in Bangladesh. It was found that all the parameters comply with DoE as well as ZDHC requirements (Both COD ?and ?TSS comply with the aspirational limit, and BOD comply with the foundational limit). However, no threshold limit for TDS has yet been defined in the ZDHC guidelines. ?There is an opportunity to improve the wastewater further and this huge wastewater can be reused for production purposes. Therefore, it is a great chance to reduce groundwater withdrawal significantly for the production process. Hence, the environmental impacts can be minimized drastically.
