Description: The practice of measuring tractor pull has been reported since the early part of this century by authors such as Sjogren (1920). The need for pull measurement arose with the advent of replacing horses with tractors as the primary source of tractive power on North American farms. Each tractor was quoted by the number of horses it could outpull even though no common method of determining this number existed in the tractor industry. Until that time, it was difficult to compare the performance of one tractor with that of another, prompting the market to demand standardization of the tractor ratings.
