Description: Defecation patterns during the growing phase were studied for 144 pigs. Although there were large differences in dirtiness of pens at any given time, the trend in the majority of the pens was for the pens to get dirtier as the pigs got older. A correlation was not found between degree of dirtiness and stocking density of the pen. The difference in dirtiness between pens housing barrows and gilts was not significant. From this study it can be concluded that growth may influence but is not by itself a primary factor in determining the degree of dirtiness of a pig pen.

Keywords: effect of growth on porcine defecation patterns
