Description: A review of the proposed Canadian Farm Building Code for bottom-unloading silos and the ISA recommended practice for the design of these structures is presented. Experimental results of haylage pressure measurements in a fiill-scale concrete silo provide a comparison with the predictions of the above design standards. Reasonable validation of the Canadian code is shown. The design formulae in the proposed code also provide a conservative estimate of the overpressures in the unloader region. These overpressures seem to be concentrated over a relatively small depth of 0.1 times the silo diameter. The magnitude of the pressure peaks at the unloader arm can be as much as five or six times the maximum wall pressure at higher levels in the silo.
