Description: The determination of evaporation from soil-water and precipitation information is a common practice in hydrologic investigations. For computations of this type a decision must be made concerning the soil-water flux at the lower boundary of the control volume employed. Three alternatives may be considered: (i) the soil-water flux at the lower boundary may be ignored (ii) it may be estimated using laboratory-determined soil-water capillary conductivity and soil-water capillary potential functions or (Hi) under appropriate conditions a time-dependent lower boundary at which the soil-water flux is zero may be used. This paper is concerned with the development of a model for evaporation computation using the third alternative. The developments that follow are based upon a graduate thesis (4).

Keywords: calculation of evaporation from measurements of soil water and the soil water characteristic
