Glasshouse design with high pressure evaporative cooling
Authors: Scott, E.R.
Description: Research glasshouses have been used for many years in the study of the growth of plants. In using glasshouses for research purposes, there are many problems in obtaining desirable environmental conditions. The most important of these is the excessive temperatures occurring during the summer months. Various methods of reducing maximum temperatures have been used including shading, water curtains, mechanical and evaporative cooling (3). Another problem which causes difficulty is the non-uniformity of the lighting in a glasshouse. This is caused by several factors including structural shading, size, shape and orientation of the house, and variation in solar altitude during the day and from season to season. The effect of these variables can be such as to reduce the per cent solar energy trans mission to as low as (55% of the maxi mum (6).After consideration of the above factors, it was decided to construct a clear span glasshouse having extruded aluminum structural members, and diffusing glass for maximum light uniformity and to equip the house with a system of high pressure sprav nozzles to reduce summer house temperatures.
