Characterization de la surface de contact pneu-surface rigide

Authors: Y. Bedard, S. Tessier, L. Chi, C. Lague et L. Chenard
Description: The procedure presented herein allows for a rapid estimation ofthe contact area between a tire and a rigid surface. The length and width of the contact area were measured using a large caliper and two hypotheses relative to the shape (elliptical, rectangular with rounded comers) of tire foot prints were tested for their accuracy at predicting the real surface-tire contact area. Several combinations of loads, tire sizes, and inflation pressures for agricultural tires installed on the running gears of 13.6 and 14.6 m3 1iquid manure spreaders were used for the tests. Very good correlation was found between actual contact length and width of the prints with the corresponding dimensions measured using the caliper (R2 of 0.93 and 0.98 for the length and width, respectively). The hypotheses of the tire-surface contact area shape being elliptic or rectangular adequately represent the tire print area (R2= 0.97).
