Application of selective bio-product recovery process developed for flax shive to additional biomass feedstocks: oat hulls, sunflower hulls, hemp hurds, and cereal straw.

Description: Development work has been already underway for recovery of multiple high-value products from flax shive, an agricultural byproduct of flax straw processing for fibre. Sequential flax shive extractions have yielded separate streams of phenolics and hemicellulose-derived carbohydrate polymers. Preliminary experiments were undertaken to extend application and evaluation of the same extractions to four additional agricultural byproducts available within Manitoba, comparing to flax shive. The feedstocks were: oat hulls; hemp hurds; sunflower hulls; and cereal straw, specifically the flaked Simply Straw
