Ammonia and Particulate Matter Emissions Inventory for Confined Feeding Operations in Alberta
Authors: Atia, A., I. Edeogu
Description: Concerns associated with growth, economic and environmental risks and sustainability, social license to operate, market access, climate change, among several others, including food safety, are increasingly faced by the agricultural crop and livestock sectors in Alberta today. In 2005, the confined feeding operation (CFO) industry - beef cattle (feedlot), dairy cattle, poultry, swine and sheep - in the province embarked on a project to develop a strategic plan that would assist the industry with managing air emissions from CFOs in the province. The strategic plan was completed in 2008 and one of its many recommendations was for the development of a new emissions inventory for the CFO industry. In 2012, APMEICA - Ammonia and Particulate Matter Emissions Inventory for Confined Feeding Operations in Alberta - was released. Statistics Canada 2006 census data, semi-annual agricultural survey data and other provincial data were used as the source of activity factors for APMEICA 2006. The inventory was updated in 2013 based on 2011 census data and updates in the other databases. Emission factors (rates) for ammonia were obtained from the Canadian National Agri-Environmental Standards Initiative (NAESI) and for particulate matter, from the Canadian National Agri-Environmental Health Analysis and Reporting Program (NAHARP). APMEICA is scheduled for another update in 2018 based on 2016 census data and updated activity factors. This paper outlines the development of APMEICA 2006 and 2011, including the emission estimation approach, calculation method, forecast, QA/QC procedures, results, and the outcomes and implications associated with the results.
