Cost-Effective Biochar Adsorbents for Naphthenic Acid (NA) Removal from Oil Sands Tailings Water

Description: Biochar is a promising adsorbent for the removal of toxic compounds from oil sands tailings water. The 1st year study of this 2 year research project was to develop a cost-effective solution for removal of NAs and TOCs from oilfield waters based on biochar and specific adsorbents. Albert Innovates-Technology Futures (AITF) , collaborative with University of Alberta (U of A) and Calgary (U of C) under AI-Biosolution and Suncor funding supports , developed cost-effective biochar-based adsorbents. AITF evaluated removal efficiency of simulated NA water (artificially NA polluted water) and actual tailings waters tested. AITF modified biochar achieved 82% NA removal using actually tailings water. The removal result was comparable to 85% NA removal with a benchmarked AC. Additionally, AITF-modified biochar was capable of removing major heavy metals from the actual tailings water (> 90% of Al, Cr, Fe & Pb, 70% of As, 35% of Ni removed, and Cu and Zn not removed). Preliminary Economics shows that AITF modified biochar cost-effectively rivalled a benchmark AC. The 2nd year will focus on (1) Developing a regeneration process, (2) Evaluating the economics of the enhanced overall adsorption process, and (3) Formulating a basic pilot-scale process for NA removal with AITF modified biochar.
