Review of Hydro-thermal Processing Technologies

Description: There is a lot of attention on development of biomass based energy and products as these are more environmentally friendly compared to the fossil fuels sources. The naturally-occurring biomass usually has a high moisture content and almost always undergoes through the drying process before used for production of energy and fuels. This is one of the contributors to the high cost of biomass-based energy and products. Hydrothermal processing of biomass can help in addressing the issues of high moisture content of the biomass. This type of processing uses the high moisture content biomass by making a slurry of biomass with water. This could help in improving the overall economics of the processes. Hydrothermal processing, such as liquefaction and gasification, are thermochemical processes that cause thermal disintegration of biomass in hot compressed water, making it highly reactive.
