Compression Characteristics and Coefficient of Internal Friction of Hollow and Solid Stem Varieties of Wheat

Description: Straw collection and transportation is a major logistical consideration when considering biomass feedstock for biofuel production. Due to the low density of the straw, the cost of moving these straws from the field to the processing plant or storage site is high. Previous research have been done on increasing the straw bulk density and have led to producing more dense straws (double-compressed bales, pellets, cube, and briquette) but the cost of processing them and their durability is still a challenge. This work investigated the compression characteristics and coefficient of internal friction of wheat straw. Twelve varieties of wheat straws (solid and hollow stem) were studied. Samples were conditioned to its desired moisture (14, 18 and 22%) before testing for their coefficient of internal friction while the compression test was carried out on a single moisture content (14%). The shear box apparatus and tension/compression testing machine were employed for the friction and compression test respectively. Compression and relaxation models were fitted to the compression test data to determine their applicability to wheat straw compression. The results indicated that moisture had effect on coefficient of internal friction with values ranging from 0.095-0.669. There was no difference between the internal friction of both hollow and solid-stem wheat. This work will help in the storage and transportation of straw by developing or improving existing equipment that will handle and compact straw efficiently.
