Description: Subsurface agricultural drainage systems are necessary to maintain productivity in poorly drained soils. Unfortunately, they deliver a significant amount of nitrate into receiving waters through the outlet. A carbon source can be used in edge-of-field bioreactors at the outlet of subsurface drainage systems to enhance denitrification of the effluent. A laboratory column study was conducted to determine nitrate reduction under saturated and unsaturated conditions in wood chip bioreactors. Columns were filled with wood chips, a known influent nitrate concentration was added, and effluent concentrations were collected daily and analyzed for nitrate levels. It was found that saturated conditions resulted in greater reduction of nitrate compared to unsaturated conditions. The impact of flow rates and residence time on nitrate reduction will be presented.
