Description: Runoff and sediment commencing primarily from agricultural fields (known as NPS pollution) is an elementary source for polluting streams and creeks. These loads are transported to the downstream waterbody through three main processes: interrill and rill erosion, ephemeral gully (EG) erosion and classical gully erosion. Therefore, proper identification of these concentrated flow paths, followed by the application of an appropriate best management practices (BMPs) is cardinal towards extenuation of NPS pollution. Vegetative Filter Strip (VFS), when constructed at edge of the field, can effectively trap sediments and pollutants carried through runoff. Furthermore, the maximum effectiveness of the VFS at a watershed scale could be achieved through adequate selection of the location and size of the VFS along the edge of the field. This study focused on the development of a watershed?based approach to evaluate the performance of in field vegetative filter strip through the use of AGNPS_VFS toolkit. The toolkit integrates a vegetative filter strip model (VFSMOD) with a watershed?scale hydrology and sediment transport model (AGNPS).
